hand-fasting

Updated: Apr 23

Does hand-fasting have to be done at a wedding ceremony?

Hand-fasting is not the sole domain of wedding ceremonies. It can be done during an engagement, when a couple makes the choice to live together or to celebrate a special ceremony, an anniversary, or a renewing of vows.

As a celebrant, I just love including hand-fasting in my marriage ceremony ritual and often read this passage that relates to the ritual:

We have gathered here in this beautiful place under the eye of the sun and supported by the nurturing earth beneath us. We have gathered to bear witness to the joining of two people in love. Here before this circle of family and friends we honour a very ancient tradition practiced by lovers of centuries past in a hand-fasting. Handfasting is both a ritualisation of the couple’s commitment, and it is also a ritual of community celebration.

Please talk to me about other rituals you might like include like a sand ceremony. Sand ceremonies join lives together as one. A sand ceremony symbolises union, as unique and individual lives, blend together making one colourful and glorious keepsake.

  • Or just add … a funky stand-up signing table (aka an antique clothes ironing board!).

  • Or just add … a lucky horse shoe. Horseshoes are associates with good luck and fortune, bringing a wish for future prosperity to the marrying couple.

  • Or just add … a unity candle. A unity candle represents the joining of love, lives, and families.
